Your website used to compete for one thing: a click from a Google results page. Now customers also ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI summaries, which answer directly and only sometimes send visitors on. At the same time, AI is changing how websites get built, written and maintained, and how visitors get helped once they arrive.
This interactive guide helps business owners make sense of it: how AI search affects your traffic, how to stay visible, how to control which AI companies use your content, and how to work with web builders and agencies in the AI era. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
of Google searches led to a click on a regular result when an AI summary appeared, versus when none did
of visits with an AI summary included a click on a source link inside the summary itself
of searches ended the browsing session entirely with an AI summary versus without one

What actually helps you show up in AI answers
Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on the same core Search systems, so normal SEO fundamentals still apply. It says there’s no special markup or file required, and that it doesn’t use the much-discussed llms.txt file for Search. In practice, the pages AI tools cite tend to share a few traits:
- They answer the question directly, then add depth. Lead with the answer, not three paragraphs of introduction.
- They show real expertise: specific numbers, local details, first-hand experience and named authors.
- They’re specific to one topic. A page about “kitchen remodeling in Boise” beats a page listing every service you offer.
- They’re consistent across the web. Your business details, reviews and profiles all tell the same story.
- They’re crawlable and fast. If search engines can’t access or render a page, AI features can’t use it either.

The 45% default reflects Pew’s finding (8% vs 15% click rates). Your mix of searches will differ, so check Search Console for which queries drive your traffic. The last figure shows how much better your remaining visitors must convert to keep the same number of leads.
Control which AI companies use your content
Major AI companies now run separate crawlers for training their models and for powering AI search answers. That means you can, for example, allow AI search tools to cite and link to you while opting out of model training. Choose your preferences to generate rules for your site’s robots.txt file.

Let AI companies use your content to train their models?
Blocking Google-Extended affects Gemini training and grounding only. It doesn’t remove you from Google Search or AI Overviews, which use Googlebot. robots.txt is a request that reputable crawlers honor, not an enforcement mechanism. Check each provider’s documentation for current user-agent names.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google. Google says it doesn’t use llms.txt for Search, and server logs show few AI crawlers request it. It won’t hurt, but your time is better spent on clear, expert content and solid technical SEO.
Should I block AI crawlers?
Most businesses benefit from allowing AI search crawlers, since that’s how assistants find and cite you. Blocking training crawlers is a reasonable choice if you’d rather not contribute content to model training. The builder above generates either setup.
Is an AI website builder good enough for my business?
For a simple brochure site, often yes, as a starting point. Replace generic generated copy with your own expertise, add real photos, and make sure you can edit, export and own everything.
